Jan Karat (1948 - 2003)
Jan Karat was born on the 06.12.1948 in Qamishli and grew up in the second generation of west-Assyrian singers there.
He stayed in Qamishli and did not leave up to his death. As a teenager he began to sing in the early 70ies together with Farid Youssef, Elias Karam (Domit), Jalil Maiilo and others.
The cooperation with the known composer George Chachan supported the talent of Jan Karat as a singer. The song „Hesh Ono Zouro“ (together with Farid Youssef) was one of his first steps which was later followed by Songs like „O Zamoro, Halyo yo u Yawmano“, Lema ‘Amekh“, „Me Na’mouthi Rhimoli“ and others.
These songs of the early period were spread only in part in official works. In the year 1975 a work appeared under the management of George Chachan (Gozerto) and contained among other things songs of Jan Karat.
His musical career continued from its beginning in the 1970ies. Karat sang many well-known songs of the recent generation. „Bu Darbo d-loqena“, „Beroula Beroula“, Shlom lekh o Hlitho Izla“ and other songs, which found their way into the hearts of the listeners and even today among the recent generation.
From the mid 80ies Jan Karat also composed own songs like “Yawmo B’emrayna” or “Kose Molina”. In his music career Jan Karat released four Assyrian Albums. Beyond these official records he also sung some Songs at the Festivals of the Syriac Song in Qamishli, which were published on separate Records as compilation of those Festivals.
Jan Karat is also known as the “Father of the Merdelly – Song”. This Arabic dialect of the Mardin area (Turkey) was performed by him. In this dialect he released 8 records:

Jan was an artistic multi-talent. Apart from singing he was also well known as a painter and calligrapher. Many inscriptions in Qamishli have his handwriting. He painted in particular church buildings with biblical motifs and provided calligraphs in associated areas.
The humorous singer and artist Jan Karat died on 07 December 2003 in his hometown Qamishli. Immediately after his death an autobiography of his life was published.
His Son Fadi began to sing during the lifetime of his father and accompanied him on several journeys abroad (e.g. USA or Tunis).
